Dr. Madeleine Orr Joins FIA University as Visiting Professor

Post by : Meena Ariff

A big step has been taken in the world of motorsport and mobility. Dr. Madeleine Orr, a well-known expert in sports and climate change, has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the FIA University. This university is a leading centre for education, research, and training in motorsports and mobility.

Her appointment was welcomed warmly by Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the President of the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), which is the worldwide governing body for motorsport and the federation for mobility organisations.

This new role will allow Dr. Orr to help improve environmental sustainability in both motorsport and the automotive world. With her deep knowledge and passion for climate action, she will play a key role in helping the FIA become more eco-friendly.

Who is Dr. Madeleine Orr?

Dr. Orr is an international name in the field of sustainability and sport. She has earned a PhD in Kinesiology with a focus on Sport Management, and a Master’s degree in Natural Resource Science and International Event Management. She combines science, sports knowledge, and event planning skills to study how sports can affect – and be affected by – climate change.

Her work has been recognised around the world. She has appeared on Forbes 30 Under 30 and has received praise from organisations like Corporate Knights. Her recently released book, WARMING UP, talks about how climate change is affecting sports and what actions can be taken to solve this problem.

Why This Appointment Matters

The appointment of Dr. Orr is an important moment for the FIA. It shows that the organisation is serious about making motorsport and mobility more sustainable. Her role will help develop new ideas, high-quality research, and strong partnerships in the fight against climate change.

The FIA believes that sustainability is not just a side topic – it is a main goal. With the help of experts like Dr. Orr, they aim to become leaders in showing how sports and cars can be part of the climate solution.

What Will Dr. Orr Do at FIA University?

As a Visiting Professor, Dr. Orr will have many responsibilities. Some of her main tasks include:

  • Doing important research on climate change and its impact on motorsport and mobility
  • Helping create new courses and training for students
  • Mentoring students and guiding them in their studies
  • Advising on how to do proper research
  • Representing the FIA University at global events and meetings

She is already working on two big projects:

  • Studying how climate change is affecting the World Rally Championship
  • Looking for ways to reduce emissions caused by travel in race calendars

Her efforts will not only help motorsport become more eco-friendly but will also improve how races are planned and run worldwide.

About FIA University

FIA University is one of the top places in the world for learning about motorsport and mobility. It trains professionals, researchers, and leaders from all over the world. Every year, it helps many people improve their knowledge and take on important roles in the racing and transport industries.

In 2024 alone, over 250 people graduated from FIA University programs. These included Race Directors, Stewards, and senior executives, who completed advanced courses in sport governance, leadership, and sustainability.

The University is also involved in social issues. It supports six scholarships for students researching online abuse in sports, in partnership with Dublin City University. This is part of the FIA’s “United Against Online Abuse” campaign, which recently received funding of £400,000 from the EU’s Erasmus+ Programme for 2025–2027.

Leaders Share Their Views

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said,

“Improving sustainability in sport and mobility is one of our biggest goals. Dr. Orr’s appointment makes our team stronger and smarter. She will help FIA University grow and help us do even more in protecting the planet. I’m happy to work with her and see what we can achieve together.”

Dr. Madeleine Orr also shared her thoughts,

“I’m truly honoured to join FIA University. Sport is not just fun and games. It has the power to bring people together and solve tough problems like climate change. I’m excited to help the FIA grow in sustainability through research, learning, and teamwork.”

Willem Groenewald, FIA Secretary General for Mobility and Sustainability, added,

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Orr to our university. Her knowledge and experience in climate action will help motorsport and the auto industry make real progress in sustainability.”

The Future of Sustainability in Motorsport

The FIA is making clear steps toward a greener future. With experts like Dr. Orr leading the way, there is real hope for reducing the carbon footprint of racing and driving.

This move also shows how sport, education, and science can come together to create a better world. From reducing travel emissions to changing how events are managed, everything counts when it comes to fighting climate change.

The FIA’s focus on research, leadership, and cooperation will shape not just the future of motorsport but also how vehicles, roads, and travel are seen in the world of tomorrow.

Dr. Madeleine Orr’s appointment as Visiting Professor is more than just a title. It’s a sign that motorsport is ready to face climate challenges with serious actions and smart solutions. With her skills and the support of the FIA University, the road ahead looks promising – for sport, for mobility, and our planet.
