The Indonesian Navy has deployed a naval warship to help transport residents returning to their hometowns ahead of Eid al-Fitr, as travel demand increases across the country during the annual holiday migration.
The vessel, KRI Semarang-594, departed from a naval dock in North Jakarta and will operate on the Jakarta–Bangka Belitung route. The move is part of efforts by authorities to support safe and efficient transportation during one of the busiest travel periods in Indonesia.
First Deployment to Bangka Belitung Route
According to Rear Admiral Yayan Sofiyan, the Navy’s Operations Assistant Chief of Staff, this marks the first time the warship has been assigned to sail to the Bangka Belitung Islands during the Eid holiday season. In previous years, naval ships typically served routes to major cities in eastern Java such as Semarang and Surabaya.
The warship will travel approximately 400 nautical miles north from Jakarta and is expected to transport passengers free of charge. After delivering travelers to Bangka Belitung, the vessel will remain on standby to carry passengers back to Jakarta once the holiday period ends.
Helping Reduce Holiday Travel Congestion
Authorities say the deployment is intended to ease pressure on land transportation systems during the Eid homecoming season, locally known as “mudik.” Officials also hope the initiative will encourage residents to avoid long-distance motorcycle travel, which often leads to congestion and safety risks.
The program highlights the Indonesian Navy’s role in supporting public mobility and ensuring smoother transportation during major national holidays.
