The Malaysian government has announced a 50% toll discount across highways nationwide in celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, aiming to ease travel costs for millions of citizens. The initiative was confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during a public address in Kuala Lumpur.
The toll reduction will be effective for 48 hours, starting from March 18 and ending on March 19. It applies specifically to Class 1 private vehicles and is expected to benefit a large number of commuters traveling to their hometowns for festive celebrations.
Government Cost And Coverage
According to officials, the move will cost the government approximately RM21 million in compensation to toll concessionaires. However, certain toll locations, particularly at border checkpoints such as Johor crossings, will not be included in the discount scheme.
Authorities said the measure is part of broader efforts to support citizens amid rising living costs and global economic uncertainty.
Additional Relief Measures Announced
Alongside the toll discount, the government introduced several other initiatives to provide financial relief ahead of the festive season. These include early disbursement of cash aid under welfare schemes, additional public holidays, and special financial assistance for civil servants.
The Insolvency Department has also been directed to fast-track bankruptcy discharge cases for around 4,000 vulnerable individuals, including single parents.
Call For Financial Discipline
While announcing the benefits, Anwar urged Malaysians to remain financially responsible during the festive period. He emphasized the importance of careful spending, especially given ongoing global economic challenges.
The toll discount is expected to significantly reduce travel expenses and encourage smoother movement across the country during one of Malaysia’s busiest holiday seasons.
