A significant road accident was narrowly averted on the Chandigarh–Manali highway when a driver was filmed seemingly asleep while traveling at nearly 100 km/h.
This alarming incident came to light after a video recorded by a passing vehicle went viral on social media. Footage depicts a white sedan swerving across lanes, the driver appearing slumped and unresponsive to the ongoing traffic.
Efforts to Avert a Catastrophe
The video reveals a truck driver, traveling in close proximity, who noticed the alarming state of the sedan's driver and attempted to mitigate the situation. He was heard repeatedly blaring his air horn and shouting to awaken the man, yet the driver seemed oblivious for several kilometers, head reclined back as the vehicle sped along.
Fortunately, the incident occurred on a quieter part of the highway, which possibly helped prevent a severe collision.
Commercial Driver Under Investigation
The sedan in question bore commercial registration plates, but it remains unclear if the driver was operating a taxi or working for a transport company. Authorities have yet to confirm how or where the vehicle was eventually brought to a stop.
Experts in road safety emphasize that this incident underscores the pressing issue of driver fatigue, particularly among those in commercial settings, who regularly endure long hours, tight deadlines, and minimal rest.
Warning About the 'Silent Killer' on Roads
“Driving while drowsy is as perilous as driving under the influence,” stated a road safety advisor. “Even a brief moment of microsleep at high speeds can result in catastrophic outcomes.”
Demand for Stricter Regulations
Although local law enforcement has not issued an official comment, this troubling incident has sparked extensive online debates, with many advocating for stricter regulations regarding rest periods for commercial drivers to prevent such potentially fatal incidents.
The viral video serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent necessity for enhanced monitoring, awareness, and regulation to ensure safer highways for all.
