Dubai Greenlights AED34B Gold Line Metro Project

Dubai Greenlights AED34B Gold Line Metro Project

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has given the green light for the Dubai Metro Gold Line, which stands as the emirate’s most significant public transport venture.

Valued at AED34 billion, this project will introduce a 42-kilometer fully underground metro line equipped with 18 stations, marking Dubai's first all-underground metro initiative.

The Gold Line will create seamless links with the existing Red and Green Lines of the Dubai Metro while also integrating with Etihad Rail, enhancing overall connectivity throughout the UAE.

Project Timeline and Vision

Construction is slated to commence shortly, targeting a completion date of September 9, 2032. The timeline promises a delivery rate 30% quicker than that of the Dubai Metro Blue Line.

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that the Gold Line will connect 15 crucial locations in Dubai, catering to approximately 1.5 million individuals and facilitating mobility for over 55 major development initiatives.

Key Route and Connectivity

The Gold Line will begin at Al Ghubaiba, traversing through essential areas such as:

  • Mina Rashid

  • City Walk

  • Business Bay

  • Mohammed Bin Rashid City

  • Meydan

  • Al Barsha South

  • Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC)

  • Jumeirah Golf Estates

It will interconnect with:

  • Red Line at Business Bay and Jumeirah Golf Estates

  • Green Line at Al Ghubaiba

  • Etihad Rail at Meydan and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Impact on Transport and Economy

This project is projected to:

  • Accommodate over 465,000 daily commuters by 2040

  • Alleviate congestion on essential metro paths by 23%

  • Eliminate more than 40 million road trips each year

  • Expand metro infrastructure by 35%

With finalization, the Dubai Metro’s network will witness growth from 120 km to 162 km, increasing the number of stations from 67 to 85.

Officials anticipate that the venture will yield a 430% economic return over 20 years by enhancing time efficiency, diminishing fuel consumption, lowering accident rates, and curbing carbon emissions.

Advanced Technology and Development

The construction of the Gold Line will employ state-of-the-art tunnel boring machines to minimize disruptions for residents. Additionally, Emirati professionals will lead the project, showcasing local expertise in large-scale infrastructure developments.

Dubai’s Expanding Transport Network

Since its inauguration in 2009, the Dubai Metro has serviced over 2.8 billion passengers. In 2025, it accounted for 295 million riders, indicating significant growth in public transport usage.

The Gold Line is destined to play a crucial role in shaping Dubai’s future, aligning with its aspiration to be among the globe’s top cities for quality of life.
