Eddie Murphy, the legendary actor and comedian whose career has spanned nearly 50 years, is set to receive the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. The AFI board has announced that this prestigious award will be presented during a star-studded gala at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18.
“Eddie Murphy is a genuine American icon,” remarked Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board. “His impact on film, television, and stand-up comedy is profound, and his talent is boundless.”
At age 64, Murphy gained fame as a young stand-up star and became a beloved household name through his performances on Saturday Night Live. He later achieved blockbuster success with films like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and the Shrek series. His remarkable career also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls in 2007, alongside other prestigious awards such as a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In the Netflix documentary Being Eddie, Murphy shared his take on fame and accolades, stating, “Winning is wonderful, but not winning doesn’t keep me up at night. I’m still Eddie when the morning comes.”
He was notably presented the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes, where he gave a brief but heartfelt acceptance speech. He reflected, saying, “When you’re younger, you take things lightly. Now I truly value every opportunity and moment.”
The AFI Life Achievement Award ceremonies are well-known for their celebrity appearances. Last year’s event honoring Francis Ford Coppola attracted stars like Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford. Murphy will become the 51st recipient of this esteemed award, which first went to John Ford in 1973. Recent recipients include Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews.
