A shooting incident in central Athens has left multiple individuals injured, as law enforcement intensifies the hunt for a suspect believed to be elderly. Officials confirmed that the assailant opened fire in two locations on Tuesday, causing widespread panic and a significant security response throughout the city.
The first location to be targeted was a social security office, where a shotgun was used, injuring an employee. Responders were swift to the scene, administering first aid before transporting the injured individual to a hospital. The suspect managed to escape prior to police apprehension.
Further investigations revealed the same suspect unleashed another shooting at a courthouse in a different central Athens area. This assault resulted in several injuries, and footage captured emergency teams evacuating victims via ambulances outside the courthouse.
Law enforcement recovered the firearm believed to have been utilized in the incidents and initiated a broad manhunt. Greek media suggests the suspect is an 89-year-old man, while authorities have yet to confirm specific details regarding his identity.
As investigations continue, officials are trying to ascertain what motivated the shootings. Reports indicate that the suspect may have left behind documents at the courthouse, presumably to clarify his actions, though this has not been verified yet.
Representatives from EFKA, the national social security authority, stated that the attacker entered their premises, ascended to an upper floor, and fired after warning one employee to move aside. Another staff member was reportedly hit in the leg amidst the chaos.
Gun violence is quite rare in Greece, where firearm ownership is tightly controlled. This incident has sparked concerns over public safety, particularly because of the unusual profile of the suspect.
Ongoing police efforts aim to locate and apprehend the gunman, with authorities advising the public to remain vigilant and report any potentially helpful information regarding the case.
