Kim Jong Un Orders North Korean Army to Prepare for Military Build-Up

Kim Jong Un Orders North Korean Army to Prepare for Military Build-Up

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called on army commanders to turn military companies into elite, self-sufficient combat units as the country pushes ahead with plans to strengthen its armed forces. The remarks were delivered during a two-day gathering of company commanders in Pyongyang, according to North Korean state media KCNA. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23 and was described by KCNA as the first gathering of its kind involving the army’s company commanders since the ruling Workers’ Party held its Ninth Congress in February. During his address, Kim stressed that every military company must be prepared to contribute to what he described as the goal of a “new-era military build-up.” He also called for the country to develop a stronger military and accelerate a military transformation based on North Korea’s own approach. The comments underline the continued importance Pyongyang places on military readiness, organisational discipline and the ability of smaller army units to operate effectively.

North Korea Focuses on Combat Readiness and Military Modernisation

The latest remarks reflect Kim’s continuing emphasis on strengthening the North Korea Military. By focusing on company-level formations, the North Korean leader signalled that military development is not limited to weapons and equipment but also involves improving the preparedness and effectiveness of frontline units. Military companies are smaller formations within the army’s organisational structure. Their training, leadership and ability to operate independently can influence how effectively a larger force functions. Kim’s call for these units to become more capable and self-sufficient suggests that the leadership wants improvements across different levels of the armed forces. KCNA’s report did not provide detailed information about new equipment, specific training programmes or a timetable for implementing the proposed changes. It also did not outline a new operational plan connected to the speech. However, the emphasis on a stronger army fits into North Korea’s broader policy direction, which combines conventional military capabilities with the development of nuclear weapons and missile systems.

Ruling Party Congress Sets Military Priorities

North Korea’s Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers’ Party, held in February, established the country’s policy direction for the following five years. During the congress, Kim called for stronger conventional armed forces while reaffirming the country’s commitment to developing its nuclear and missile capabilities. The latest conference of company commanders appears to carry those priorities into the army’s internal organisation and preparedness. Kim’s message focused on the role of individual military companies in meeting the wider objectives of the country’s defence strategy. The emphasis on a military transformation “in our style” also reflects Pyongyang’s preference for developing its armed forces according to its own strategic priorities. The speech, however, did not specify how the proposed transformation would affect the size of the army, its budget or its deployment. For regional governments monitoring developments on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea’s continued focus on military capabilities remains an important security issue. Any assessment of the practical impact of the latest announcement will depend on further details about implementation and changes to the country’s military activities.

Kim Jong Un Reportedly Arrives in China

The military gathering coincided with reports about Kim’s travel to neighbouring China. South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported on Saturday, citing a South Korean government source, that Kim had arrived in Dandong, China, using a newly opened bridge. At the time of the report, South Korea’s Unification Ministry had not provided an immediate comment, while China’s foreign ministry had not immediately responded to a request for comment. The reported arrival therefore remained based on the information attributed to the South Korean government source. The development comes as Beijing and Pyongyang seek to restore economic activity along their shared border. The two countries officially opened a major land-border crossing in Dandong earlier in October, with the stated aim of revitalising trade and commercial links following years of disruption associated with the pandemic and strained relations. Dandong is an important gateway for trade between China and North Korea. Improved border connectivity could support the movement of goods and economic exchanges, although the extent of any recovery will depend on how trade and cross-border activity develop.

China-North Korea Relations Show Signs of Engagement

Kim’s reported arrival in China has drawn attention because of the recent high-level engagement between the two countries. His last known visit to China before this reported trip was in September 2025, when he attended the 80th Victory Day celebrations in Beijing and held a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi subsequently visited North Korea in June 2026, signalling renewed diplomatic engagement between the neighbouring countries. China remains an important partner for North Korea, particularly in economic and diplomatic matters. The reopening of border infrastructure provides another channel for contact, although it does not by itself establish the scale of future trade or indicate that all previous difficulties in bilateral relations have been resolved. The latest developments place North Korea’s military priorities alongside its continuing relationship with Beijing. However, the available reports do not establish a direct connection between Kim’s army speech and his reported journey to China.

Donald Trump’s Interest in Renewing Talks With North Korea

The latest developments also come as US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in restarting talks with North Korea. Reuters reported on Friday that officials in the United States and South Korea saw declining prospects of a meeting between Trump and Kim before the end of 2026. No new meeting was confirmed in the report. Any future engagement would depend on diplomatic decisions and arrangements by the governments involved. The United States, South Korea and other regional stakeholders closely monitor North Korea’s nuclear programme, missile development and conventional military activities. Renewed dialogue could provide an opportunity to address security concerns, but the timing and prospects for negotiations remain uncertain. China is also preparing to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Shenzhen next month, an event Trump is expected to attend. The gathering will bring regional economic issues into focus, although no confirmed meeting between Trump and Kim was established in the reports provided.

What Kim Jong Un’s Latest Military Message Means

Kim’s call for stronger and more independent army companies reinforces the central role of military preparedness in North Korea’s national policy. His remarks point to a focus on improving the capabilities of units across the armed forces, rather than relying solely on major weapons programmes. At the same time, North Korea’s reported engagement with China and the reopening of a major border crossing highlight the importance of its relationship with Beijing. These developments are taking place alongside uncertainty over whether Washington and Pyongyang will resume high-level talks this year. For now, the confirmed details centre on Kim’s speech to army company commanders and his call for a new phase of military development. The practical consequences for North Korea’s forces, regional security and diplomacy will become clearer only as further information emerges.
