The United States has implemented more rigorous screening for H-1B visa candidates, focusing primarily on individuals in the tech, social media, and financial industries. Consular officials are now mandated to examine candidates' resumes and online activities for any connections to censorship, content moderation, disinformation control, or similar endeavors.
Candidates who are determined to have restricted protected speech in the US risk being labeled ineligible. This policy impacts both new applicants and those reapplying.
This action highlights an increasing emphasis on free speech and seeks to tackle worries about the alleged suppression of conservative views online. It is an extension of previous expansions of visa vetting processes, which included student visas, and occurs alongside new fee requirements for H-1B applications.
Republican leaders assert that these enhanced vetting measures are essential, responding to what they perceive as attempts by certain agencies to censor or limit online expression regarding public health and electoral topics.
