In a thrilling display of cycling, French athlete Benoît Cosnefroy secured a commendable third place at the iconic Amstel Gold Race, representing UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The grueling 257km journey stretched from Maastricht to Valkenburg, featuring a daunting 33 climbs through the picturesque Limburg hills. The race initiated at a brisk pace, as an early escape group made their mark, but the peloton gradually ramped up the speed, reeling in most of the early leaders as the event unfolded.
Intensity ramped up during the final 70km, notably on steep inclines such as Loorberg, Gulperberg, and Kruisberg. A select group of frontrunners, including Remco Evenepoel and Mattias Skjelmose, broke away from the chasing pack.
The pivotal moment arose during the Keutenberg climb when Evenepoel and Skjelmose forged ahead, creating an insurmountable gap. They later engaged in a fierce two-man sprint for the title.
Meanwhile, Cosnefroy kept his focus within the pursuit group. Facing challenges with minimal assistance, he rode strategically and maintained his foothold as the race splintered in the closing stages, particularly around the final ascent at Cauberg.
Crossing the finish line in Valkenburg, Evenepoel outpaced Skjelmose in a dramatic sprint to claim victory. Cosnefroy’s sharp timing and effort propelled him to a well-earned third position, finishing just shy of two minutes behind the leaders.
The excitement of the Ardennes Classics continues as La Flèche Wallonne is set for Wednesday.
