A fresh dining concept in Beijing is allowing young guests to “travel back in time” to ancient China. Diners can immerse themselves in an atmosphere rich with traditional music, attire, and cuisine for an unforgettable experience. This innovative venue has swiftly captivated a younger audience.
At the restaurant, women adorned in elegant traditional attire stroll around a serene stone courtyard. Patrons can capture moments under a charming pavilion, accompanied by the soothing melodies of a Chinese zither. The tranquil environment genuinely transports visitors to a bygone era.
The establishment features an eight-course meal alongside a selection of traditional outfits. Before indulging in their feast, guests can choose from a variety of hanfu — Han-style garments. This wardrobe includes elaborate headpieces, jewelry, and other accessories to enhance the historical look.
This new dining experience has launched amidst a challenging economic climate in China, which is experiencing sluggish spending. Yet, many young individuals continue to invest in experiences that bring them joy, a trend referred to as “emotional consumption.” This term reflects the purchase of items for personal enjoyment rather than practical use.
Recent reports indicate that those born in the 1990s are particularly inclined to seek out purchases that foster happiness, including popular toys like the quickly selling Labubu dolls. China's commerce minister has even noted that such consumption patterns could bolster the economy.
Guests report that the experience is well worth the cost. Businessman Carey Zhuang shared with AFP that he spent roughly 1,000 yuan to dress as a character from the celebrated novel Dream of the Red Chamber, from which the restaurant draws much of its inspiration.
As the younger generation seeks avenues to relieve stress and savor unique experiences, this “time travel” restaurant has rapidly gained popularity. It underscores the increasing emphasis on experiential over material consumption trends in modern China.
