Our bodies often communicate their nutritional needs through various signs, yet many overlook these indicators as minor or trivial. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist with training from AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, recently detailed five key signals on Instagram that suggest your body is in need of more nutrients.
The initial sign he discussed is brittle nails. Weak or easily broken nails may indicate a deficiency in protein and iron. Protein is crucial for tissue repair, while iron is vital for oxygen transport in the bloodstream. Prolonged deficiency in these nutrients can lead to fragile nails.
The second sign involves muscle twitching, whether in the eyelids or limbs. This often-repeated involuntary movement may point to inadequate magnesium levels, which are essential for proper nerve and muscle function. A deficiency can heighten nervous sensitivity, resulting in twitching.
The third sign mentioned relates to the clicking sounds emitted by joints. While many people consider these noises normal, they can also indicate a lack of vitamin D3 or calcium, both essential for strong bones. Insufficient levels may lead to weakened joints and audible sounds during movement.
Dr. Sethi's fourth sign focuses on the premature greying of hair. While some attribute early greyness to genetics, deficiencies in vitamin B12 or copper can also play a role. B12 is crucial for healthy blood cells and oxygen delivery to hair roots, while copper is vital for melanin production, the pigment responsible for hair color. Low levels can lead to unexpected greying.
The fifth indicator is easy bruising. If minor bumps cause bruises, it may suggest a lack of vitamin C or vitamin K1. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, reinforcing skin and tissues, while vitamin K1 is crucial for blood clotting. Inadequate levels can weaken the skin, making it prone to bruising.
Though these signs may seem inconsequential, they should not be disregarded; they can indicate that the body requires a more balanced intake of protein, minerals, and vitamins. Incorporating foods like green vegetables, nuts, fruits, dairy, eggs, and whole grains can help enhance nutritional status.
Nonetheless, it's important to note that this information serves educational purposes only. If you observe any of these symptoms, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or nutritionist for appropriate advice. Self-diagnosing or using supplements without expert guidance can be detrimental.
