At the midpoint of the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Tommy Fleetwood and fellow Englishman Aaron Rai find themselves tied for the lead after remarkable rounds at Yas Links on day two.
Fleetwood, who co-led following the opening round, ignited his second round with a series of birdies, quickly taking control with three birdies in his initial holes. The two-time champion of this event and current FedEx Cup titleholder concluded the day with a stellar 66, recording seven birdies against just one bogey on the 15th hole, bringing his total to 14 under par.
Alongside Fleetwood is World Number 30 Aaron Rai, who delivered a remarkable flawless 64. Rai’s round featured five birdies and an exceptional albatross on the par-five second hole, where he holed his approach from 218 yards with a six-iron, captivating the spectators with one of golf’s rare accomplishments.
The leading pair holds a two-shot margin over their nearest competitors, Andy Sullivan, Nicolai Højgaard, and Richard Sterne, with 2019 champion Shane Lowry one stroke back.
Beginning the day in a five-way tie, Fleetwood soon trailed as early starter Nacho Elvira displayed strong play on the front nine. However, Fleetwood quickly reclaimed momentum, birdying the first three holes to retake a share of the lead, before gaining sole control following a birdie on the par-five seventh and extending his lead with another on the 11th.
Lowry matched Fleetwood’s score with a birdie on the 13th yet faltered after a double bogey on the 14th hole. Fleetwood then moved ahead by two with a birdie at 14 but fell back to a shared lead post-bogey at 15. He rebounded with a birdie at 16, keeping him level at the top of the leaderboard alongside Rai.
As the competition thickens with two rounds remaining, the quest for the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship title promises to be exhilarating.
