flydubai Orders 60 GE Engines to Power New 787 Fleet

flydubai Orders 60 GE Engines to Power New 787 Fleet

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai has made a major leap into long-haul aviation with a new order for 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace. The engines will power the airline’s first widebody fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, signalling a strategic shift beyond its established 737 operations.

The deal, unveiled at Dubai Airshow 2025, includes spare engines and a long-term services agreement, ensuring operational reliability as the carrier prepares to extend its network to new global destinations. Since its launch in 2008, flydubai has expanded to more than 135 destinations across 57 countries, and this move represents a significant milestone in its long-haul growth strategy.

The Boeing 787-9, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, will allow flydubai to meet rising demand and diversify its service offerings. The GEnx-1B engines, recognized for durability and performance in challenging operating conditions, have accumulated over 62 million flight hours worldwide and power two-thirds of all active 787 aircraft.

The aircraft-engine combination positions flydubai to optimize fuel efficiency while maintaining operational reliability, critical for sustaining growth across regional and intercontinental routes. This investment underlines the airline’s commitment to innovation and expansion while responding to evolving passenger needs.

With the first 787s expected in the coming years, flydubai is set to redefine its long-haul presence, offering passengers extended connectivity and enhanced travel options through Dubai’s strategic aviation hub.
