Four people were killed in a railway accident in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday when they were struck by a passing train while crossing the tracks. The victims had just disembarked from the Chopan–Prayagraj Express at Chunar junction and, instead of leaving from the platform side, crossed the rails into the path of the Howrah–Kalka Netaji Express coming from the opposite direction.
Railway officials said the incident occurred after passengers chose to cross the tracks rather than wait to deboard on the designated side. Emergency services rushed to the scene to render aid, while local police and railway teams opened an inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conveyed his condolences to the victims' families and instructed authorities to fast-track relief and ensure prompt medical care for the injured. The case underscores continuing safety challenges at stations and the need for greater public awareness about the hazards of crossing tracks outside approved areas.
Railway authorities reiterated appeals for commuters to use foot overbridges and follow safety protocols to avert similar tragedies. With India's vast rail network moving millions daily, officials stressed that vigilance and adherence to safety measures remain crucial.
