German prosecutors and the Federal Criminal Police Office announced the arrest of 18 people following a coordinated operation against an alleged online fraud and money laundering network. The action was carried out with support from German payment service firms and international law enforcement partners.
Investigators say the scheme, active between 2016 and 2021, involved the misuse of credit card records belonging to an estimated 4.3 million people across 193 countries. Reported financial losses tied to the activity exceed €300 million.
Authorities described the arrests as part of broader efforts to dismantle sophisticated, cross-border cybercrime rings. Officials highlighted the necessity of close collaboration between states and private-sector payment providers to tackle such complex financial offences.
The inquiry remains active, with investigators tracing financial transactions and communication channels to uncover further suspects and disrupt remaining operations linked to the network.
Officials said the crackdown underscores Germany's commitment to protecting consumers and the integrity of global financial systems from increasingly organised digital fraud.
