Former MMA star Gina Carano is making a surprising return to professional fighting after nearly 17 years away from the sport. The 44-year-old fighter will face former UFC champion Ronda Rousey in the main event of Netflix’s first major MMA show this weekend in California.
The highly anticipated fight has already created massive excitement among combat sports fans. Many experts believe the bout could become one of the most-watched MMA events of the year because it brings together two of the biggest names in women’s mixed martial arts history.
Carano last fought professionally in 2009 before moving into Hollywood and building a successful acting career. She became one of the first female MMA athletes to gain mainstream popularity and helped open doors for women in combat sports before the rise of modern UFC women’s divisions.
After stepping away from fighting, Carano appeared in several films and television projects. However, her acting career slowed down in recent years following controversy surrounding her social media posts. During that difficult period, Carano said she struggled with health and personal challenges before eventually finding motivation to train again.
Ronda Rousey reportedly played a major role in convincing Carano to return to MMA. Rousey has often described Carano as one of her biggest inspirations in the sport. Their upcoming fight has transformed from a dream matchup into reality after years of speculation among fans.
Carano revealed that returning to training after such a long break was physically demanding but emotionally rewarding. She explained that her current mindset and maturity have helped her approach the sport differently compared to her younger years. The veteran fighter also said she feels mentally stronger and more focused now than ever before.
The event will take place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. While Rousey has hinted that this may be her final fight, Carano has not confirmed whether she plans to continue fighting after this comeback appearance.
The return of Gina Carano marks one of the most unexpected comebacks in modern MMA history and highlights the growing popularity of women’s combat sports around the world.
