The Itzulia Basque Country kicked off with thrilling excitement as Felix Großschartner showcased his impressive skills in the stage 1 individual time trial, capturing third place for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
The seasoned Austrian cyclist finished the 13.8km course in 17 minutes and 36 seconds, trailing stage victor Paul Seixas of Decathlon CMA CGM by a mere 27 seconds. Großschartner initially held second place before being surpassed by Kévin Vauquelin.
Promising Start for General Classification
Renowned for his time trial abilities, Großschartner demonstrated exceptional prowess from the start. He powered through the opening climb, sustained a strong rhythm through the middle segment, and finished robustly on the intricate final stretch.
This performance positions him as a strong contender within the early stages of the general classification as the race heads into more challenging terrains.
UAE's Team Performance Shines
UAE Team Emirates-XRG also recorded impressive results from their other riders. Brandon McNulty claimed eighth place, finishing 43 seconds behind the stage leader with another solid time trial effort.
Meanwhile, Isaac del Toro, who is pivotal to the team's GC goals, came in 13th. The young Mexican is expected to find his stride during the approaching mountainous stages later this week.
Intensifying Race Ahead
With numerous tough mountain stages on the horizon, the competition at Itzulia Basque Country is set to scale up. Cyclists will now shift their focus toward climbing challenges that are expected to shape the overall rankings ahead of the finale on Saturday.
Großschartner expressed contentment with his performance, noting his strong power levels despite battling windy conditions—an optimistic indicator as the race continues.
