Guilbeault Warns Canada’s 2030 Climate Goals Are Now Out of Reach

Guilbeault Warns Canada’s 2030 Climate Goals Are Now Out of Reach

Post by : Meena Ariff

Former federal minister Steven Guilbeault warns that Canada will struggle to meet its 2030 climate objectives following recent governmental changes. He claims key climate initiatives have been weakened or postponed, turning the targets into an unattainable goal.

Guilbeault pointed to a recent agreement between the federal government and Alberta as a critical moment. This partnership facilitates a new bitumen pipeline to British Columbia while delaying vital climate measures, including the oil and gas emissions cap as well as aspects of the clean electricity regulations.

He emphasized that while private investments are crucial, they cannot replace the need for robust rules and standards. Without such regulations, he argues, Canada will fall short in reducing emissions sufficiently to fulfill its commitments.

Guilbeault further revealed that he was not informed about the agreement's specifics in advance. Upon learning its contents, he felt unable to lend his support and opted to resign from his cabinet role. He believed that staying would compromise his values too significantly.

He also criticized the Alberta government for hindering renewable energy projects, noting that the province was previously drawing significant investments until a political decision halted new renewable initiatives, costing many jobs.

Guilbeault is concerned that yielding to Alberta will lead to increased future demands. He remarked that the federal government had been making steady strides in climate action but now appears to be regressing.

Despite his resignation, he intends to continue advocating for enhanced climate action within his party, hoping to inspire the government to reassess its current trajectory and adopt a more balanced approach.
