In Halifax, a 16-year-old has been charged with child sexual abuse and possession of child exploitation materials, with court proceedings now postponed until January to permit the defence team time to analyze substantial evidence.
Authorities allege the teen was associated with the online extremist collective referred to as 764, which reportedly coerces young individuals into self-harm and sexual acts on camera. Investigators indicate he may have interacted with numerous minors globally.
The Canadian government has recently designated 764, along with several other groups, as terrorist organizations. Prosecutors are currently evaluating the implications of this designation on the case, while reaffirming the presumption of innocence for the accused.
Additionally, the court has modified the teen's bail conditions, prohibiting the use of internet-enabled devices, although he will have limited access to a basic cellphone to coordinate with his legal counsel.
Officials caution that while such incidents are infrequent, the proliferation of digital platforms raises the likelihood of similar cases emerging in the future. The youth is expected to return to court in January to enter a plea.
