The iconic Halo franchise is gearing up for its next big leap. Microsoft and Halo Studios have unveiled Halo: Campaign Evolved, a comprehensive remake of the beloved 2001 title, Halo: Combat Evolved, scheduled for release in 2026. This updated version aims to retain the classic moments that fans love while providing a breathtaking visual experience for a new audience.
Players can expect access on platforms like Xbox Series X|S, PC through Xbox and Steam, as well as PlayStation 5. The game will also support Xbox Cloud Gaming and the Xbox Play Anywhere feature, launching simultaneously for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, Halo: Campaign Evolved boasts captivating 4K graphics, refreshed animations, new voice recordings, and remastered soundtracks. Developers focus on capturing the emotional essence of the original while enhancing gameplay to appeal to contemporary players. This remake is designed to complement rather than replace the original, presenting a “modern evolution” faithful to its origins.
The storyline will expand with three additional prequel missions that dive into events preceding the classic gameplay. Introducing new settings, characters, and adversaries, these missions enrich the lore of the Halo universe. Familiar missions will see redesigns for improved pacing, more detailed storytelling, and streamlined navigation, with The Library mission reimagined to heighten suspense while keeping its signature atmosphere intact.
With thoughts of nostalgia mingling with innovation, fans will be delighted to see nine new weapons—such as the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle—integrated into the original campaign for the first time. Vehicle gameplay is upgraded as well, allowing players to hijack and operate the Covenant Wraith tank, a feature that wasn't present in the 2001 edition.
Gameplay improvements include optional sprinting, an expanded Skull system offering the most gameplay modifiers in any Halo campaign, full four-player online co-op, and the return of two-player split-screen modes on consoles. These features ensure that both seasoned fans and newcomers can enjoy the game together.
By focusing on the initial campaign, Halo Studios aims to craft an ideal introduction for new players while honoring the experiences of long-time fans. Attendees at the Halo World Championships will have the opportunity to play the remake ahead of its official launch.
Set to debut in 2026, Halo: Campaign Evolved signifies a new journey for this legendary gaming franchise, bridging nostalgic experience with present-day gaming standards.
