The Impact of Under-Bed Storage on Sleep Quality: Insights from an Expert

The Impact of Under-Bed Storage on Sleep Quality: Insights from an Expert

Post by : Saif Rahman

For many, the area beneath the bed is a convenient spot for items such as boxes, clothing, and old paperwork. While seemingly practical, professionals warn that this habit could negatively influence your sleep. Interior designer France Brunel points out that items stored under the bed can evoke a sense of “unfinished business” in the mind, keeping it active and restless while the body seeks rest.

Brunel notes that even if these items are out of sight, the mind is aware of their presence. They may symbolize unresolved issues, contributing to a mental burden. Consequently, the nervous system remains mildly alert, hindering true relaxation and leading to lighter, more restless sleep.

This notion aligns with the principle of cognitive load, where surrounding clutter—even hidden—exerts mental energy to be remembered, thereby diminishing clarity and restorative sleep. The brain sends signals that there is more to be accomplished, even during sleep.

Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese philosophy on spatial arrangement, similarly advises against storing belongings under the bed. It suggests keeping this space clear allows for the unrestricted flow of “chi,” or life energy. If obstructed, the ambient energy can become stagnant, hindering emotional release and sound sleep.

Brunel recommends clearing out under-bed storage, cleaning the area, and promoting airflow. An uncluttered, open under-bed space can facilitate both physical and mental relaxation. A serene bedroom environment, free from concealed clutter, is conducive to deeper, more restful sleep.

These insights aim to enhance readers' awareness of how their surroundings impact wellness. Nonetheless, persistent sleep issues should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

By creating an uncluttered sleeping space, individuals may enjoy a more peaceful, restful, and comfortable night's sleep.
