Mumbai witnessed one of the most enthralling knockouts in recent ICC T20 World Cup history as India defeated England by 7 runs in a sensational second semi‑final of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
India elected to bat first and posted a massive 253 for 7 in their 20 overs, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
Sanju Samson was the star of the innings, scoring a blistering 89 runs off just 42 balls — an innings filled with eight fours and seven sixes. His knock provided the backbone for India’s formidable total.
Others also contributed with quick runs, including Shivam Dube (43) and Ishan Kishan (39), helping India maintain a relentless scoring pace against an experienced bowling attack.
England’s response was spirited and remarkable as well. After early setbacks, Jacob Bethell played a sensational innings of 105 from 48 balls, keeping the chase alive until the dying moments. Despite his century and partnerships with Will Jacks and Sam Curran, England finished on 246 for 7, agonizingly short of the target.
The combined total of 499 runs in this match set a new benchmark for aggregate runs in a T20 World Cup game — underlining the breathtaking nature of this clash.
In the final overs, India’s bowlers, led by disciplined death bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, held their nerve to restrict England just enough to secure the nail‑biting victory.
With this win, India has advanced to the T20 World Cup 2026 Final, where they will face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8, 2026.
