England manager Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Declan Rice will face stronger competition for his place in the national team's midfield after Alex Scott produced an impressive performance during England's emphatic 7-0 victory over Croatia. Scott was handed his first international start in the Nations League match after Rice withdrew from the England squad. Playing alongside Elliot Anderson in central midfield, the Bournemouth player took his opportunity and helped England control the game against an experienced Croatian side. The performance has now created an interesting selection battle ahead of England's upcoming fixtures, with Tuchel making it clear that established players cannot simply assume their positions are guaranteed.
Scott's opportunity came at an important moment for England. With Rice unavailable, Tuchel opted to pair Scott with Anderson, giving the two midfielders responsibility in a major Nations League fixture.
England dominated Croatia and eventually secured a convincing 7-0 victory. Scott and Anderson were able to influence the tempo of the game despite facing experienced Croatian midfielders such as Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic. For Scott, the match was more than just another appearance for his country. It was an opportunity to demonstrate that he can operate effectively at international level and compete with established names for regular playing time. His performance has strengthened the options available to Tuchel as England continue their preparations for future international challenges.
Tuchel was asked whether Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice should be concerned about his position following Scott's performance. The England manager's response was clear: competition is exactly what he wants within the squad. Tuchel stressed that England cannot depend on only two central midfielders. According to the manager, having several players capable of performing at a high level gives the team greater tactical flexibility and allows him to select players based on form, opposition and the demands of each match.
Tuchel continues to regard Rice as one of the best midfielders in European football. Instead, Scott's emergence gives England another option and creates healthy competition for places.
Rice has established himself as one of England's most important midfielders over recent years. His ability to contribute defensively, carry the ball forward and provide stability in central areas has made him a regular choice for the national team. Tuchel's comments therefore appear to be less about replacing Rice and more about increasing England's depth. The manager wants multiple players who can perform different roles rather than relying on a small group of established starters. That approach could become increasingly important as England face a demanding international schedule. For Rice, the message is straightforward: his position remains highly valued, but performances from other midfielders can influence selection decisions.
Scott's display against Croatia was particularly significant because of the quality of the opposition. Croatia have traditionally been known for producing technically strong midfielders, with Modric and Kovacic among the most experienced players in that area of the pitch. England's midfield duo was able to handle the challenge and contribute to a dominant team performance. For Scott, playing alongside Anderson also provided an opportunity to develop an understanding with another young midfielder. Both players were comfortable taking responsibility in possession, while their movement and work rate helped England maintain control. The performance could give Tuchel another midfield combination to consider for future fixtures.
The emergence of Scott adds another layer to an already competitive England midfield. Rice remains an established option, while Anderson has also earned attention with his performances. Scott's latest display now puts him firmly into the conversation. For a manager, this kind of competition can be valuable. Rather than selecting the same combination for every match, Tuchel can potentially change the midfield depending on the opponent and the tactical requirements. Against a team that sits deep, he could choose players capable of progressing the ball and creating chances. Against a stronger attacking side, a different combination could provide greater defensive protection. Scott's versatility could therefore make him particularly useful as England continue their campaign.

England are currently second in their group, behind Spain, who are the reigning World Cup champions. The next challenge comes against the Czech Republic at Wembley. The fixture gives Tuchel another opportunity to assess his midfield options and determine whether Scott's performance against Croatia deserves another start. A strong showing could further strengthen Scott's case, while Rice's eventual return would give the manager another major selection decision. The competition could ultimately benefit England as Tuchel looks to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
The central message from Tuchel is that England need greater variety throughout the squad. The manager has made it clear that he does not want the team to rely on only a couple of central midfielders. Instead, he wants several players capable of delivering when called upon. Scott's performance provides evidence that England are developing that depth. The Bournemouth midfielder has now shown that he can handle a significant international assignment and perform alongside another relatively young player. For England, having players ready to challenge established starters can increase competition throughout the squad.
Rice's position is unlikely to become immediately insecure simply because Scott has performed well in one match. However, the situation does mean that Tuchel now has another serious option to consider. Rice remains highly regarded by the England manager, but Scott has demonstrated that he can contribute at international level when given responsibility. The eventual midfield selection could depend on the opponent, tactical setup, player form and fitness. That competition is exactly what Tuchel appears to want as England continue their England midfield development.
