India has said it will not bring back the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This agreement was made in 1960 to share river water from India with Pakistan. But after a deadly attack in Kashmir, which India says was terrorism, the country paused the treaty.
India’s Home Minister said that water that used to go to Pakistan will now be used in Indian states like Rajasthan. He said Pakistan was getting this water unfairly. India plans to build canals to keep the water within its own land.
The rivers covered in the treaty are very important for Pakistani farmers, as they give water to most of their farms. Pakistan says it had nothing to do with the attack. Even though the two countries agreed to stop fighting last month, the water agreement has not started again.
Pakistan warned earlier that stopping this water could be seen as a serious threat or even an "act of war." It is also looking into taking the issue to international courts.
