Indian Airlines Resume Flights to Kathmandu Additional Flights for Stranded Passengers

After a period of disruption due to unrest in Nepal, Indian airlines are set to resume normal flight operations to Kathmandu from Thursday. The reopening of Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu comes after the airport was temporarily closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, causing widespread disruption for travelers.

Airlines including Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, and SpiceJet had to cancel flights earlier in the week due to security concerns and restricted airport operations. Many Indian passengers were stranded in Kathmandu, unable to return home amid curfews and restrictions imposed by the Nepal Army.

Additional Flights for Stranded Passengers

To help bring stranded travelers back to India, the Indian government coordinated with major airlines to operate special additional flights. Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that Air India and IndiGo would run extra flights to Kathmandu, in addition to their regular services.

Air India stated that special flights would operate on Wednesday and Thursday to help stranded passengers. The airline also confirmed that scheduled flights would resume from Thursday, thanking the government and other agencies for supporting the arrangements.

IndiGo also announced on social media that its operations to and from Kathmandu have resumed. The airline added that it would operate additional flights over the next few days to clear the backlog of travelers affected by the airport closure.

Government Guidelines and Passenger Support

The Indian government has advised airlines to maintain reasonable fare levels while operating these additional flights. This measure ensures that passengers are not overcharged during the period of disruption.

Air India Express has offered passengers the flexibility to reschedule flights up to 17th September 2025 without extra fees or fare differences. Passengers who choose to cancel their bookings are eligible for full refunds.

SpiceJet and Air India Express also provided updates confirming that their operations beyond Thursday would remain unaffected. This ensures that travelers can plan their trips confidently without fear of further cancellations.

Context: Nepal Unrest

The recent unrest in Nepal followed the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid massive anti-government demonstrations. The Nepal Army imposed nationwide restrictions, including curfews, to control potential violence during protests.

These developments forced the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal’s main airport, affecting both domestic and international flights. Indian passengers, among others, faced difficulties returning home, prompting quick action by Indian airlines and government authorities.

Impact on Travelers

The temporary closure of the airport caused confusion and delays for hundreds of passengers. Families, tourists, and business travelers found themselves stranded in Kathmandu. Emergency arrangements by airlines and government coordination have now helped ease the situation.

Passengers who had planned to travel during the disruption were offered flexibility and support, including free rescheduling and refunds. The extra flights from Air India and IndiGo are expected to bring most stranded passengers back to India over the next few days.

Airlines’ Response

  • Air India: Operating special flights on Wednesday and Thursday; resuming normal operations from Thursday.

  • IndiGo: Additional flights arranged; regular operations resumed.

  • Air India Express: Offering free rescheduling or refunds for affected flights up to 17th September.

  • SpiceJet: Operations affected on Tuesday and Wednesday; flights beyond Thursday remain unaffected.

The airlines emphasized cooperation with the Indian government and other authorities to ensure passenger safety and convenience during this challenging period.

As the situation in Nepal stabilizes, Indian airlines are returning to normal schedules, ensuring smooth travel for passengers between India and Nepal. Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updated flight information and adhere to any travel advisories issued by both Indian and Nepalese authorities.

The reopening of flights and additional services highlights the importance of coordination between governments and airlines during times of crisis. Quick and organized responses ensure that stranded passengers can return home safely and that disruptions are minimized.

Indian airlines have efficiently responded to the challenges posed by unrest in Nepal. With additional flights, fare guidance, and flexible booking options, passengers can now return safely from Kathmandu. The reopening of Tribhuvan International Airport marks a positive step toward normalcy for air travel between India and Nepal.

While the recent political events in Nepal caused temporary disruption, effective government coordination and airline efforts demonstrate how travelers can be supported during emergencies. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and plan their travel according to official updates, ensuring a safe and smooth journey back home.
