The much-anticipated 2026 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off on March 26, concluding on May 31. Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will lead the charge, though the status of their home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, remains uncertain following a tragic incident during their last title celebrations. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is said to have received conditional approval from local authorities to host matches, pending adherence to robust safety measures.
This year's IPL auction, set for Tuesday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, marks the third year running that the auction occurs outside of India, following Dubai in 2024 and Jeddah in 2025. As ten franchises aim to enhance their squads, this auction is expected to be filled with suspense, as teams competitively seek top players to increase their chances of capturing the prestigious IPL trophy.
There are 77 player slots available, including 31 designated for overseas talent. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) lead with 13 open slots, while Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has ten vacancies. With a pool of 1,355 players narrowed down to 359—244 from India and 115 from abroad—the competition is fierce.
Cameron Green, the Australian seam-bowling all-rounder, is anticipated to attract several high bids due to his versatile skills and the considerable demand for his talents. His estimated base price could see him become the auction's most expensive player, potentially exceeding ₹25 crore. Other prominent names generating buzz include Ravi Bishnoi, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Matt Henry, Tim Seifert, David Miller, and Sri Lanka's Matheesha Pathirana, who was recently released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Moreover, the BCCI has added 19 new players just before the auction, featuring emerging talents like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ben Sears, and Ethan Bosch, broadening teams’ choices for finalizing their rosters. Franchises are anticipated to invest significantly as they look to blend star power with new prospects.
With the IPL 2026 promising electrifying cricket, fierce rivalries, and a dynamic auction, fans can look forward to a season filled with thrills, surprises, and unforgettable experiences. As excitement builds, all attention turns to Abu Dhabi, where teams vie not just for players, but for glory in the world's most loved T20 league.
