A dual citizen of the U.S. and Iran has been apprehended in Los Angeles under allegations of arms trafficking directed towards African nations, as reported by federal authorities in the United States.
The individual, identified as Shamim Mafi, was arrested at the Los Angeles International Airport on April 19, 2026. Officials claim she was involved in the transactional arrangements of military assets, which include drones, explosive devices, and substantial amounts of ammunition.
Prosecutors assert that Mafi collaborated with a co-conspirator via a business named Atlas International to facilitate unlawful arms transactions. Investigative efforts suggest these dealings occurred at various sites, including California. A notable transaction allegedly involved delivering Iranian-manufactured drones to the Sudanese military, valued at over €60 million.
Mafi purportedly accrued millions from coordinating travel and meetings pertinent to the transaction. The complaint also indicates her frequent journeys across nations such as Iran, Oman, and Turkey, where she resided for several years.
Since 2016, Mafi has held lawful permanent residency in the U.S., though she is believed to have maintained extensive connections abroad. Investigators are examining her previous commentary that suggested her ex-husband had links to Iranian intelligence apparatus.
The sensitive nature of this case is exacerbated by the persistent turmoil in Sudan, which has faced significant violence and humanitarian challenges since 2023. U.S. officials classify the alleged arms movement as a significant risk, potentially exacerbating regional instability.
Formal charges have been laid against Mafi, who could be sentenced to 20 years in prison if found guilty. She is slated for her initial court appearance in a federal setting in Los Angeles.
The investigation remains active, with authorities suggesting that additional information may surface regarding other individuals potentially involved in this case as it progresses.
