In preparation for the parliamentary elections this Sunday, Iraq has officially initiated the campaign silence phase, marking the end of political promotions.
From Saturday morning, all political entities and candidates must cease campaigning, providing a serene environment for over 1.3 million voters to contemplate their choices before heading to the polls. The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced that special voting will kick off at 7:00 AM, encompassing 26,538 displaced individuals.
This electoral quiet aims to foster a neutral atmosphere, untainted by last-minute promotional activities or political pressures. Officials have stressed that any breach, such as endorsing candidates or parties during this timeframe, could lead to severe legal repercussions.
Experts argue that such protocols are vital for ensuring equity in Iraq’s intricate political framework, enabling the electorate to make well-informed decisions absent of outside influences. For many citizens, this peaceful period symbolizes a rare opportunity to focus exclusively on their electoral choices, amidst a normally charged campaign environment.
With election day imminent, Iraqis are gearing up to engage in what is considered a decisive vote for the nation’s future, highlighting the significance of compliance and public understanding during this crucial silent phase.
