Jean-Gabriel Pageau showcased his skills with a remarkable unassisted short-handed goal just 3:02 into overtime, propelling the New York Islanders to a 4-3 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday in Las Vegas. Pageau seized a loose puck in his own defensive zone, sped up the right wing, and unleashed a wrist shot past Vegas goalie Akira Schmid to clinch the win.
The Islanders' lineup displayed remarkable synergy, with Matthew Schaefer scoring and assisting, while Bo Horvat and Jonathan Drouin each added two assists to the mix. Emil Heineman and Mathew Barzal also contributed goals, while goalie Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves, lifting his recent record to 4-0-1 over the past five games and 4-2-1 overall against Vegas.
For the Golden Knights, Shea Theodore, Tomas Hertl, and Reilly Smith found the net. Schmid managed 20 saves in goal, but Vegas experienced its fourth straight home loss and now stands at 0-2-2 during this stretch. Despite a strong start, the team was unable to hold onto their lead.
Vegas dominated the opening moments, preventing the Islanders from registering a shot for the first 10:42. However, the Islanders struck first when Emil Heineman scored at 14:03 with a wrist shot that deflected off Jack Eichel’s stick and into the net. Schaefer then doubled the lead with a power-play goal that zipped past Schmid from outside the circles.
In the latter part of the second period, Vegas reduced the deficit to 2-1 when Theodore maneuvered from the right point and placed a wrist shot inside the left post. The third period saw Hertl equalize by converting a rebound from Jeremy Lauzon’s shot, followed by Smith giving Vegas a 3-2 edge with a sharp angle rebound.
With 3:10 left, the Islanders pulled Sorokin for an extra attacker. Mathew Barzal executed a crucial one-timer from the top of the left circle at 2:37, sending the match into overtime. The Islanders carried their momentum and eventually triumphed with Pageau’s short-handed winner.
This triumphant victory marks the Islanders' third consecutive win, reflecting their tenacity and teamwork. Sorokin’s stellar goalkeeping and timely contributions from key players helped New York navigate past a determined Vegas team, ensuring a significant road win.
