Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon Extended Amid Rising Tensions

Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon Extended Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Badri Ariffin

The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon has been prolonged for an additional three weeks after discussions held at the White House. US President Donald Trump, who facilitated the extension, expressed willingness to pursue a sustainable peace agreement in the area.

The ongoing conflict involving Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon poses significant challenges to resolving the overarching regional hostilities, which have persisted for over eight weeks. Critical issues include escalating tensions with Iran regarding its nuclear ambitions and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump conveyed that the US is not rushing to finalize a peace deal, emphasizing the need for a solution that lasts. He noted the US's strong position amidst the current naval confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions in the strait have intensified, particularly after Iran seized two substantial cargo ships, prompting global concerns over oil transport and supply. These actions have impacted one of the world's key oil transit routes, leading to a rise in both Brent and US crude prices by over 1% following these events.

Iran has ramped up its military tactics, employing fast boats to confront US naval vessels, suggesting a strategic shift. While the US maintains it has control in the area, Iran's capabilities to disrupt maritime operations continue to be evident.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, denied allegations of instability within its leadership, branding them as enemy propaganda, and asserted that national unity prevails in Iran.

This conflict has further strained relations between the US and its NATO allies. The US has voiced dissatisfaction with certain nations not fully aiding military endeavors, hinting at possible repercussions for those lacking cooperation.

Trump’s ceasefire extension with Iran is indefinite, aiming to facilitate ongoing peace discussions, though a definitive meeting date remains unannounced. He also dismissed the notion of utilizing nuclear armaments, stating that conventional forces have already inflicted considerable harm on Iran.

While the ceasefire is in effect, tensions persist in southern Lebanon, with Israeli forces executing airstrikes against Hezbollah, resulting in three fatalities. Hezbollah retaliated with rocket and drone offensives directed at Israeli military targets and northern regions.

Among the casualties reported this week was Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, according to local reports.

Prior to this ceasefire extension, Israel had indicated its readiness to recommence strikes against Iran, contingent on receiving clearance from the US.
