Defending champions Italy booked their place in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup with a strong and composed performance against Japan in the qualifiers. Playing on clay in Velletri, the Italian team secured a convincing 3-1 victory, continuing their dominant run in the tournament. With this win, Italy remains firmly on track to chase a third consecutive title, reinforcing its status as one of the strongest teams in women’s international tennis.
The turning point of the tie came in the doubles match, where Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani delivered an outstanding performance. The Italian duo comfortably defeated Japan’s pair in straight sets, showcasing excellent coordination, control, and experience under pressure. Their victory not only sealed the tie but also highlighted Italy’s depth and consistency across both singles and doubles formats.
In contrast, the United States suffered a disappointing exit after losing 3-1 to Belgium in the qualifiers. The Americans, who were runners-up in 2025 and have a record 18 titles in the competition, found themselves on the back foot early after dropping both singles matches on the opening day. Despite a spirited effort in the doubles match, where the U.S. team managed to keep their hopes alive, they were unable to complete a comeback.
Belgium’s historic win was ultimately secured by Greet Minnen, who produced a crucial upset victory against a higher-ranked American opponent. Her composed and confident performance under pressure ensured Belgium’s progression, marking a memorable achievement for the team. The players celebrated the win as a major milestone, especially for a relatively smaller tennis nation competing against one of the sport’s traditional powerhouses.
Other teams also delivered notable performances to secure their spots in the finals. Britain defeated Australia in Melbourne with a solid display, while Kazakhstan overcame former champions Canada in Astana. Ukraine continued its impressive form by defeating Poland 4-0, earning a place in the finals for the second consecutive year and demonstrating growing strength in women’s tennis.
Spain and the Czech Republic also advanced after successful qualifying campaigns, rounding out a competitive lineup for the finals. Meanwhile, host nation China had already secured automatic qualification, setting the stage for a highly anticipated tournament.
The Billie Jean King Cup finals are scheduled to take place in Shenzhen later this year, where the world’s top teams will compete for the prestigious title. With Italy aiming to extend its winning streak and several strong contenders in the mix, the upcoming finals promise high-intensity matches and exciting competition.
