The renowned filmmaker Karan Johar's beloved talk show, Koffee With Karan, has welcomed numerous Bollywood luminaries over its run, but the legendary cricketer Virat Kohli remains notably absent from the guest list. Although his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, has graced the couch multiple times, Karan recently disclosed the reason behind Kohli's absence.
In a revealing conversation with tennis champion Sania Mirza on her podcast, Karan addressed the lack of cricketer presence on his show. When Sania inquired about a guest Karan has coveted but hasn't succeeded in getting, he first mentioned Ranbir Kapoor, remarking, “He has participated before, but has declined for the past three seasons.”
Upon mentioning Virat Kohli, Karan admitted he has yet to extend an invitation, stating, “I've never asked Virat. Following the incident with Hardik (Pandya) and (KL) Rahul, I’ve refrained from inviting cricketers. I doubted many wouldn’t be willing to come, so I didn’t reach out.”
This reference points to the controversial 2019 episode featuring Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul that resulted in significant backlash over inappropriate comments. The fallout prompted the episode’s removal and led to both cricketers facing suspension from the Indian team ahead of the ODI series in Australia.
Karan Johar had expressed remorse at that time, stating he felt accountable for the scandal and the consequences faced by the players. Since then, he has decided against inviting cricketers, concentrating instead on film industry figures.
As Koffee With Karan continues to generate buzz each season, fans continue to dream of the day when Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma may sit together on the coveted couch—though it seems Karan is in no rush to make that happen.
