Kathmandu Demolition Drive Targets Slum Areas

Kathmandu Demolition Drive Targets Slum Areas

Post by : Shakul

A large-scale demolition drive has begun in Kathmandu, targeting slum settlements and alleged encroachments across key parts of the city. The operation is being carried out under directives linked to the administration of Balendra Shah.

Authorities have deployed bulldozers and enforcement teams to remove informal housing structures built on public land. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reclaim government property and enforce urban planning regulations in the rapidly expanding city.

Officials say the move aims to restore order, improve infrastructure, and ensure proper use of land. Kathmandu has been facing challenges related to unplanned urban growth, congestion, and encroachment on public spaces for several years.

However, the demolition drive has sparked concern among affected residents. Many families living in these settlements have expressed fear and uncertainty, stating that they have limited or no alternative housing options.

Reports from the ground indicate rising panic in several areas as eviction notices are issued and demolition preparations intensify. Residents are struggling to relocate, and humanitarian concerns are being raised by observers.

Balendra Shah has previously gained attention for his firm stance on urban reforms, including similar actions aimed at clearing encroachments. While some citizens support these efforts for improving city management, others criticize the lack of rehabilitation plans for displaced communities.

The situation highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing urban development with social welfare, as authorities continue efforts to modernize Kathmandu while addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
