Maryland: Kaylee Hottle, the 18-year-old actress known for her role in two Godzilla films, died early Tuesday following a car accident in the US state of Maryland, according to police.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said Kaylee was travelling in a 1995 Honda Accord with two other people. The vehicle was being driven by a 19-year-old man when it went off a two-lane highway and crashed into a culvert.
Police said officers responded to the accident at approximately 2:52 a.m. (0652 GMT) on Tuesday. The crash remains under investigation.
Investigators believe excessive speed was a factor in the collision.
"Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision," the Frederick County Sheriff's Office said in its statement.
Kaylee was taken to a hospital after the crash, where she was later pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old driver suffered injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening. The second passenger was not injured seriously and declined medical treatment.
Kaylee Hottle, who was deaf, played Jia, an important character in Godzilla vs. Kong and its sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Her performance earned recognition in the film industry, and she received a nomination for the 2024 Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.
Kaylee's father, Joshua Hottle, shared the news of her death through an emotional video in American Sign Language, which he posted on Facebook.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Kaylee was a student, also expressed its condolences on social media.
The school described her passing as a "tremendous loss" and said: "Our hearts are with Kaylee's family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time."
The school also asked people to respect the family's privacy and avoid sharing or speculating about the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash. Police have not released any additional details beyond stating that excessive speed is believed to have contributed to the collision.
