Kevin Vermaerke showcased exceptional skill during Stage 1 of the Tour of Austria, earning a commendable second place for UAE Team Emirates-XRG after a challenging ride in Gamlitz.
The American cyclist crossed the finish line just 11 seconds after the stage champion Gregor Mühlberger from Austria, securing second place in the overall standings as well.
The race kicked off in Graz, where a significant breakaway group took early control, pulling away from the main peloton.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG partnered effectively with Netcompany Ineos to narrow this gap in the last 50 kilometres, allowing their top riders to vie for stage honors.
The intensity rose as the race approached its conclusion, with the lead group fracturing and the competition for victory escalating.
Mühlberger initiated the decisive break with just over 11 kilometres to go. While others hesitated, he increased his lead, finishing strong on familiar terrain.
Vermaerke remained in contention, ultimately winning the sprint for second place, just 11 seconds behind Mühlberger.
Following this strong performance, UAE Team Emirates-XRG feels optimistic as the Tour of Austria progresses. With Vermaerke now in second on the leaderboard, they foresee multiple opportunities for stage victories ahead.
After the race, Vermaerke expressed gratitude to his teammates for their solidarity throughout. "This stage was a tough kick-off, and we anticipated the last 30 km would be critical. The break had a sizable gap early on, but our squad managed to reel it in with some splendid assistance from Ineos, as others didn't step up to help."
He recounted the defining moment that altered the outcome. "We rode impressively. In the closing kilometres, I aimed to stay near the front, yet I hesitated when Mühlberger attacked. Looking back, I should have followed him immediately. Nevertheless, I clinched second, and I’m eager for the coming days to aim for an even better result!"
