In an exhilarating opener at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand triumphed over England by four wickets in the first ODI on Sunday. England's Harry Brook dazzled with a century, but the Kiwis successfully chased 224 runs in just 36.4 overs, taking a 1-0 series lead in the three-match ODI series.
The match unfolded with intense moments, especially for the hosts who faltered early. Kane Williamson marked his return with a first-ball duck, leaving the score at 70-4 in a precarious position. However, Daryl Mitchell’s impressive unbeaten 78, accompanied by Michael Bracewell’s resilient 51, revitalized the innings. Their partnership proved crucial, complemented by Mitch Santner’s brisk 27, which ultimately clinched the victory.
England's innings was primarily shaped by Harry Brook’s stunning 135 runs off 101 balls, showcasing his aggressive batting style. Coming in during a dire situation at 56-6, Brook single-handedly resurrected England's hopes. Alongside Jamie Overton's valuable 46, they set a competitive total of 223 in 35.2 overs, a challenging score given the pitch's early movement.
New Zealand's bowlers notably disrupted England’s batting order, with Zak Foulkes emerging as the hero with outstanding figures of 4-41, effectively breaking England’s momentum along with Matt Henry’s 2-53. Despite Brook's brilliance, the New Zealand bowlers kept them in check.
Post-match, New Zealand's captain Mitch Santner expressed pride in his team's performance, noting, “The wicket had a lot to offer. Though we lost more wickets than hoped, Daryl and Michael’s partnership was crucial,” he remarked. He also commended Foulkes’ impressive bowling display, stating, “Zak swung the ball beautifully; it must have been daunting for the batsmen.”
Despite the loss, man of the match Harry Brook acknowledged his efforts, saying, “We didn’t start well, but my counter-attack strategy worked. Unfortunately, we struggled with the ball during the middle overs.”
This victory gives New Zealand an early edge in the ODI series after their recent 1-0 defeat in the T20 series against the same opponents. The next ODI is set for Wednesday in Hamilton, where England will look to even the series.
