Severe Lake-Effect Snow on the Horizon: Up to 30 cm Anticipated, Travel Alerts Issued

Severe Lake-Effect Snow on the Horizon: Up to 30 cm Anticipated, Travel Alerts Issued

Post by : Meena Ariff

The region is bracing for another wave of lake-effect snow, with authorities issuing warnings that conditions may worsen significantly from late Wednesday.

A yellow weather advisory has been put in place as snow squalls are predicted to emerge from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay on Wednesday night, lasting into Thursday afternoon. Accumulations could reach between 15 and 30 cm, with severely reduced visibility due to heavy snowfall and drifting snow.

Northwesterly winds are projected to gust up to 60 km/h, complicating travel conditions further by increasing blowing snow hazards. Although an improvement in weather is anticipated by Thursday evening, uncertainty remains regarding the regions that will experience the heaviest snowfall.

Motorists are urged to stay vigilant for abrupt weather changes, as visibility may approach zero and road closures could be necessary.

This warning follows closely on the heels of a significant early-season storm that delivered 43 cm of snow in Barrie over the weekend.

Additionally, a new color-coded alert system has been introduced: yellow signifies hazardous weather to monitor, orange alerts of potential severe weather, and red indicates critical conditions that could endanger safety and property.
