In a significant move to revitalize the Cartier sector in Laval, the Government of Canada has unveiled an $8 million investment aimed at upgrading infrastructure as part of a national strategy to bolster housing availability and community growth. This initiative is part of the Build Communities Strong Fund, a comprehensive program designed to enhance vital services and stimulate economic sustainability across Canada.
Launched under the vision of Mark Carney, this fund is dedicated to allocating $51 billion over the next decade for infrastructure enhancements, supporting key areas like housing, transportation, healthcare, education, and climate resilience, while promoting job creation and economic vitality.
Specifically, the federal contribution of $8 million will be directed towards upgrading essential infrastructure in Laval’s Cartier area, focusing on critical roadways like Labelle, d’Orly, and St-Hubert, as well as developing Labelle East Street. Efforts will include modernizing aging underground utilities and enhancing the sanitary sewer system to ensure reliability and accommodate future growth.
Government representatives have indicated that these improvements are crucial for minimizing the chances of infrastructure failure, enhancing vital services, and fostering a more sustainable urban landscape. The project is projected to either develop or maintain approximately 1,790 housing units, effectively addressing the region's housing needs while promoting denser residential living.
Alongside its housing impact, this redevelopment initiative will enhance mobility and overall quality of life for residents. Plans encompass improved amenities for active transportation and the creation of greener urban spaces, thus fostering a more livable and eco-friendly community.
Additionally, the investment is set to yield economic gains through job creation in construction and allied sectors, while also attracting further public and private funding into the area. By modernizing infrastructure and facilitating new housing projects, this effort aims to strengthen the economy and prepare Laval for future growth.
This initiative underscores the critical role of robust infrastructure in nurturing strong communities, ensuring cities like Laval can expand sustainably while fulfilling the needs of their residents.
