Coffee is widely appreciated as a daily beverage providing energy and alertness. Recent findings suggest that it may also play a role in heart protection, particularly for individuals experiencing irregular heartbeats, a condition termed atrial fibrillation. This occurs when the heart beats irregularly and can pose serious risks, including stroke or heart failure if left unaddressed.
This study, published on November 9, 2025, in JAMA Network, involved approximately 200 seniors from the USA, Canada, and Australia, all diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and who regularly consumed coffee. Participants were divided into two cohorts: one continued their routine of at least one cup daily, while the other abstained from coffee for six months.
Researchers monitored participant health through heart monitors and ECG tests. Upon reviewing the findings, they discovered that coffee drinkers experienced significantly fewer recurrences of irregular heartbeat, with 47% facing reoccurrences compared to 64% among non-drinkers. This indicates that coffee consumption could potentially reduce the likelihood of these episodes by approximately 39%.
The scientists propose that the beneficial effects might derive from coffee’s natural anti-inflammatory properties, which may lead to more efficient heart function. Another hypothesis suggests that coffee might enhance the body’s ability to cope with stress, thus supporting heart health.
The results advocate for the moderation of coffee consumption among those with irregular heartbeats, contradicting previous beliefs about its risks. However, overindulgence in caffeine can lead to sleep disturbances and increased anxiety. Therefore, moderation remains crucial.
Individuals with heart conditions should consult their healthcare providers before altering their dietary habits. Health varies from person to person, and a physician can provide personalized advice.
