Malaysia Economy Grows 5.3% in Q3 as Tech Exports Support Growth

Malaysia Economy Grows 5.3% in Q3 as Tech Exports Support Growth

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Malaysia's economy continued to expand in the third quarter of 2026, although the pace of growth moderated compared with the previous three-month period. Official advance estimates released on October 16 showed that the country's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 5.3% year-on-year between July and September. The latest figure represents a slowdown from the 6% growth recorded in the second quarter. Despite the moderation, the performance indicates that Malaysia's economy maintained momentum, supported by activity across several major industries, including services, manufacturing and construction. According to Malaysia's Department of Statistics, most economic sectors recorded positive growth during the quarter. Mining and quarrying was the notable exception, registering a contraction compared with the same period last year. The preliminary figures provide an early assessment of the country's economic performance as businesses and policymakers monitor domestic demand, international trade and investment in technology-related infrastructure.

Services and Manufacturing Lead Economic Expansion

The services sector remained a major contributor to Malaysia's economic performance, recording year-on-year growth of 5.4% during the third quarter. The sector covers a broad range of activities, including trade, transportation, financial services and other business-related operations. Manufacturing delivered an even stronger performance, expanding by 7.5% compared with the corresponding period in 2025. According to the statistics department, export-oriented industries helped support this increase. Malaysia's manufacturing sector plays an important role in the country's international trade, particularly through the production and export of technology-related goods and electronic components. Continued demand for these products has helped sustain industrial activity despite a more moderate overall growth rate. The latest figures suggest that services and manufacturing remained important pillars of the Malaysian economy during the July-to-September period.

AI Infrastructure Boom Supports Malaysia's Technology Industry

Growing global investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure has created additional opportunities for Malaysia's technology sector. As companies expand their computing capabilities and invest in the infrastructure needed to operate advanced AI systems, demand for electronic components and semiconductor products has increased. Malaysia has established itself as an important regional centre for data centre development and technology-related manufacturing. Its role in international electronics supply chains has helped the country benefit from demand linked to digitalisation, computing infrastructure and semiconductor production. The expansion of AI-related infrastructure is also relevant to Malaysia's wider investment outlook. Data centres require substantial physical infrastructure, specialised equipment and supporting services, creating opportunities for several connected industries. However, the extent to which these investments will support future economic growth will depend on continued demand, project execution and broader international economic conditions.

Construction Sector Grows as Data Centre Projects Expand

Malaysia's construction sector recorded growth of 6% year-on-year in the third quarter. The development of data centres was among the factors supporting activity in the industry. Data centre projects require extensive construction work and supporting infrastructure, including buildings, power systems and other essential facilities. As investment in digital infrastructure expands, these projects can generate activity across construction and related supply chains. The sector's performance adds another positive element to Malaysia's latest economic results. Alongside the expansion of services and manufacturing, construction helped support overall growth during the quarter. Nevertheless, the long-term contribution of infrastructure investment will depend on the continued development of projects and the strength of demand for the facilities being built.

Mining and Quarrying Remain a Weak Spot

While most major sectors expanded, Malaysia's mining and quarrying industry experienced a decline during the third quarter. The sector contracted by 4.9% compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the Department of Statistics. This made mining and quarrying the only major economic sector identified in the preliminary report as recording a year-on-year decline. The weakness highlights the uneven nature of Malaysia's economic performance. Stronger activity in services, manufacturing and construction helped sustain overall growth, but the contraction in mining weighed on the broader picture. The final GDP report is expected to provide a more complete assessment of the economy's performance across different industries.

Malaysia Raises Its 2026 Economic Growth Outlook

Malaysia's government recently revised its economic growth projections for 2026 for the second time this year. The country is now expected to expand close to the upper end of its forecast range of 4.8% to 5.3%. The third-quarter advance estimate of 5.3% falls within that annual forecast range. However, the quarterly year-on-year growth rate should not be confused with the full-year economic growth rate, which measures performance across the entire calendar year. For 2027, the government expects Malaysia's economy to grow between 4.2% and 5.2%. The outlook will depend on the performance of domestic industries, export demand, investment activity and developments in the global economy. Malaysia's exposure to international trade means that changes in global demand, trade policies and technology investment could influence its economic performance in the coming quarters.

Central Bank Keeps Its Main Policy Rate at 2.75%

Malaysia's central bank has maintained its main policy interest rate at 2.75% since reducing it in May 2025. The earlier rate cut came amid uncertainty surrounding global tariffs and their potential impact on economic activity. Interest rate decisions influence borrowing costs and can affect household spending, business investment and wider financial conditions. Maintaining the rate at its current level indicates that the central bank has not made a further adjustment to its main policy rate during this period. Future policy decisions will depend on economic conditions, inflation trends and other relevant developments. The latest GDP estimate provides another indicator for policymakers as they assess the balance between supporting growth and maintaining economic stability.

When Will Malaysia Release Final Q3 GDP Figures?

Malaysia's preliminary economic figures offer an early indication of the country's performance during the third quarter of 2026. The final GDP data are scheduled for release on November 18, 2026. The updated report is expected to provide a more detailed picture of economic activity and help clarify how different industries contributed to overall growth. Until then, the advance estimate remains the initial official assessment of the July-to-September period. The key indicators to watch include manufacturing performance, services activity, construction investment, mining output and the strength of international demand for Malaysian exports.

What Malaysia's Economic Performance Means

Malaysia's 5.3% third-quarter growth demonstrates that the economy continued to expand even as the pace slowed from the previous quarter. Strong manufacturing activity, continued services growth and investment in data centre infrastructure helped support the overall performance. The decline in mining and quarrying, however, shows that growth was not evenly distributed across all industries.
