During a recent interview, Maria Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, disclosed that she has not communicated with U.S. President Donald Trump since October 2025. Her remarks come amidst significant political turmoil in Venezuela following the U.S. capture of former President Nicolas Maduro.
Machado revealed that her last interaction with Trump occurred on October 10, the day she received the Nobel Peace Prize. She indicated that there has been no communication with him since that date.
The Nobel Committee awarded Machado for her long-standing fight against what it describes as authoritarian governance in Venezuela. She is recognized as a leading opposition figure following Maduro's removal from office in a dramatic U.S. military intervention over the weekend.
Having departed Venezuela for Norway for the Nobel ceremony last month, Machado has yet to return. She expressed a strong desire to go back as soon as possible, though she acknowledges the risks associated with the ongoing political instability.
This was her first public appearance since the U.S. military actions and Maduro's capture, and she characterized the U.S. involvement as a crucial advancement for freedom and human rights, indicating it might pave the way for a fresh start for Venezuela after years of turmoil.
Despite her support for the U.S. operations, questions linger regarding Venezuela's prospective leadership. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has assumed the interim president role, but uncertainty persists around the future and who will take the helm.
Meanwhile, President Trump has downplayed the prospects of a close alliance with Machado, suggesting she does not possess sufficient support or respect within Venezuela. This highlights the ongoing divisions concerning the nation's political future.
Machado’s comments reflect the complex, uncertain journey ahead for Venezuela. As global focus sharpens on the nation, her influence, role, and potential return will attract significant attention from both allies and detractors in the upcoming days.
