The highly anticipated MLS 2026 season will launch with a thrilling encounter as Lionel Messi's Inter Miami heads to Los Angeles to challenge Son Heung-Min's LAFC at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on February 21. This marquee matchup promises to attract significant fanfare, even as St. Louis City officially kicks off the season against Charlotte FC.
Recently, the 2026 schedule was unveiled, featuring a regular season that spans from February 21 to November 7. The league will subsequently announce the playoffs, which are set to continue seamlessly amidst international breaks. Notably, this season represents the last full campaign on the existing schedule, as MLS prepares to transition to a European-style summer calendar in 2027.
In a game-changing move, the season will also mark the league's first full broadcast on Apple TV, allowing fans to enjoy games without the need for an MLS Season Pass subscription, enhancing access to premier soccer action.
A key highlight for the 2026 season is the FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. MLS will take a seven-week hiatus to facilitate player participation and host matches at league venues. Additionally, numerous national teams are expected to utilize local facilities for training camps during the event. This hiatus will lead to an intensified schedule post-World Cup, featuring multiple weekday games to wrap up the regular season by November 7.
Inter Miami will also celebrate the grand opening of its new venue, Miami Freedom Park, on April 4. This 25,000-seat stadium marks a significant achievement for the club, with Messi featured in its inaugural match against Austin FC. Miami Freedom Park is the first of three new stadiums scheduled in MLS over the upcoming years, with New York City FC and Chicago Fire FC to follow in 2027 and 2028 respectively.
Fox will cover 34 regular-season games, including numerous doubleheaders leading up to the World Cup. The network will also broadcast the league's events following the World Cup semifinals and final. Fans can anticipate major matchups, such as Messi’s Miami taking on Philadelphia and Son’s LAFC against the Seattle Sounders.
Tata Martino is back with Atlanta United and will oversee his first competitive match on February 21 against FC Cincinnati. The 2026 MLS All-Star Game is set for July 29 in Charlotte, shortly after the World Cup, though format and opponents are yet to be revealed.
Messi’s involvement continues to elevate MLS attendance figures and ticket demand, prompting clubs to host events in larger venues, including NFL stadiums. D.C. United is set to welcome Messi to Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium on March 7, following previous high-demand events in Kansas City and Cleveland.
With a blend of exciting matches, star-studded lineups, inaugural stadium experiences, and World Cup influence, the 2026 season stands out as one of the most eagerly awaited in MLS history. Fans can look forward to competitive action and unforgettable moments as the league expands its footprint in the U.S. and beyond.
