Lionel Messi recently revealed the emotional heights he experienced while leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, marking it as one of the defining moments of his life. The Inter Miami player stated that the joy he felt lifting the trophy in Qatar equaled the happiness of becoming a father.
While attending an event in Miami, where he was honored with the symbolic “key to the city,” Messi reflected deeply on his monumental achievement, which crowned an illustrious career.
“I must say, it has nothing to do with what I usually experience, but winning the World Cup felt as monumental as when my children were born,” Messi explained. “It's a unique feeling that's hard to articulate, so immense that mere words don't suffice.”
Messi's sentiments struck a chord with fans, especially considering his 2022 World Cup triumph followed years of disappointments and near victories. His heart-wrenching loss to Germany in the 2014 final had left him tearful on the field. However, eight years later, in Qatar, Messi achieved his lifelong ambition. His exceptional performances throughout the tournament, culminating in two goals during the final against France, garnered him the Golden Ball award for the best player of the tournament, solidifying his status among football's all-time greats.
Reflecting on Argentina’s emotional celebrations in the wake of victory, Messi noted how significant this achievement was for the entire country. “The national celebrations illustrated our deep longing for this triumph after so long. It felt significant for me; winning the World Cup is the pinnacle. After that, there's nothing more to ask for,” he said.
Messi also expressed that this win felt like a fitting conclusion to his career, having accomplished everything possible at both club and international stages. “It was special since, for any player, winning the World Cup is the ultimate goal. It's akin to any professional reaching the apex of their field. I had already been fortunate to achieve much—both at club and individual levels. My Copa América victory with Argentina was crucial too. The World Cup filled in the last piece; it finalized my journey,” he remarked.
During the celebrations of Messi's crowning achievement, one of his long-time rivals downplayed the significance of Argentina's accomplishment, hinting that winning was expected for a nation of Argentina’s caliber, stirring conversations among fans regarding their longstanding rivalry.
Messi also touched on the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States, Canada, and Mexico will co-host from June 11 to July 19. While he hasn't decided if he will play, Messi expressed his hopes about the event. “I am genuinely optimistic that the World Cup will be something extraordinary,” he stated.
For the time being, the 2022 World Cup stands as a monumental achievement in Messi’s career—a milestone that not only completed his footballing legacy but also secured his name in the annals of Argentina’s sporting history.
