Microsoft has begun distributing a redesigned Start Menu with its October 2025 non-security update (KB5067036) for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. The overhaul provides a cleaner, more modern layout intended to make navigation faster and more intuitive.
The redesigned Start Menu places installed apps directly on the main screen within a dynamic interface. Users can toggle between a categorized layout and the traditional alphabetical list, and those who prefer a minimalist desktop can hide sections such as "Pinned" and "Recommended". Microsoft also lets users pin additional apps straight to the primary view for quicker access.
The menu adapts to different displays: on larger screens it expands to show more pinned and recommended items, optimizing available space. Microsoft has also introduced an improved Phone Link panel beside the Start Menu, offering quick access to smartphone notifications and messages from both Android and iOS devices without leaving the desktop.
Outside the Start Menu, the update adds understated but useful taskbar refinements. Users will see smoother thumbnail animations and an updated battery icon that now shows the charge percentage at all times. These small adjustments aim to tidy the interface and boost day-to-day productivity.
The refreshed Start Menu is being released progressively and is currently available to users enrolled in early feature updates via Windows Update. A broader distribution is expected during the upcoming November Patch Tuesday release.
To get the new design sooner, enable "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" in Windows Update settings. This choice can help early adopters receive the feature ahead of the mass rollout.
With this update, Microsoft continues refining Windows 11 toward greater customization, efficiency and user-friendliness.
