Groundbreaking Robotic Lung Surgery Conducted in Abu Dhabi

Groundbreaking Robotic Lung Surgery Conducted in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a remarkable achievement, Burjeel Medical City has executed the UAE’s first uniportal robotic lobectomy, bolstering its status as a hub for healthcare innovation in Abu Dhabi.

The procedure was performed on a 37-year-old patient diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. Utilizing an advanced approach, doctors were able to excise a portion of the lung through a single 3cm incision, augmented by robotic technology for enhanced precision.

The patient sought medical attention due to a persistent dry cough unresponsive to treatment. Subsequent tests, including a CT scan and biopsy, confirmed the diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer, prompting a surgical recommendation following a thorough evaluation by a multidisciplinary team.

The operation, overseen by consultant thoracic surgeon Dr. Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry, utilized the state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi system and was performed successfully within four hours without complications.

Dr. Chowdhry noted that this innovative technique is particularly beneficial for early-stage cancers without significant lymph node involvement, enhancing patient recovery and reducing surgical impact.

The patient was able to leave the hospital just two days post-surgery—significantly quicker than the typical recovery time of five to seven days associated with conventional surgeries. Remarkably, the patient resumed work within a month.

Burjeel Medical City emphasized that this milestone underscores the proficiency of its multidisciplinary teams and their dedication to implementing cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing patient care through minimally invasive techniques.
