Mindoro wind farm hits full capacity

Mindoro wind farm hits full capacity

Post by : Shakul

The Philippines has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy sector as the wind power facility in Oriental Mindoro is now operating at full capacity following a key infrastructure upgrade.

The 16.53-megawatt Wind Energy Power Facility (WEPF), developed by Philippines Hybrid Energy Systems Inc., had previously faced output limitations due to equipment constraints at the Calangatan Switching Station. These issues restricted the plant from fully delivering electricity to the local grid during periods of strong wind.

The installation of three current transformers at the switching station has resolved these bottlenecks, allowing the facility to dispatch its full output of around 16 MW. According to the Department of Energy, this upgrade ensures efficient monitoring and management of electricity flow, which is essential for integrating renewable energy into the grid. Officials confirmed that the project now delivers stable and uninterrupted power supply, benefiting the island’s population and improving overall grid reliability.

The wind farm, paired with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), helps manage fluctuations in wind generation by storing excess energy and releasing it when needed. This hybrid system enhances the stability of electricity supply for residential, commercial, and industrial users across Mindoro. The project is capable of powering approximately 19,200 households, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing renewable energy utilisation across the region.

The development aligns with the Philippines’ broader push toward clean energy. The government aims to achieve 35% renewable energy in its power mix by 2030 and 50% by 2040 under its national energy plan. With an estimated 66 gigawatts of offshore wind potential and multiple large-scale projects underway, the country is rapidly expanding its renewable energy infrastructure. The successful upgrade in Mindoro highlights the importance of modern grid systems in unlocking the full potential of renewable resources.
