Health Rumours Swirl Around Iran’s Leader

Health Rumours Swirl Around Iran’s Leader

Post by : Shakul

Speculation is growing about the health of Mojtaba Khamenei after he has not appeared publicly since taking office following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, assumed leadership of the Islamic Republic after his father was killed in a joint United States–Israel strike on February 28 that triggered a wider regional conflict across West Asia. Since then, his absence from public appearances has fuelled speculation about possible injuries sustained during the early phase of the war.

Reports citing Iranian officials say Khamenei may have suffered leg injuries but remains alert and is believed to be staying in a highly secure location with limited communication due to the ongoing conflict.

The speculation intensified after his first message as Supreme Leader was delivered through a written statement broadcast on state television rather than appearing on video. In the message, he vowed to continue Iran’s missile and drone operations against Israel and maintain pressure in the region, including keeping the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz closed to shipping.

Meanwhile, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed Khamenei was “wounded and likely disfigured,” although he did not provide evidence for the claim. Iranian authorities have not confirmed the extent of any injuries but insist the new leader remains capable of governing.

The leadership transition comes amid a massive military campaign by the United States and Israel targeting Iran’s missile, drone and naval infrastructure. Thousands of strikes have reportedly hit military facilities and strategic sites across the country since the conflict escalated at the end of February.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the joint campaign is progressing “better than expected,” while also warning that Israel would continue operations against Iranian forces and allied groups across the region.

Despite the rumours surrounding his health, Iranian officials maintain that Mojtaba Khamenei remains “safe and sound,” though his continued absence from public view has kept international attention focused on the stability of Iran’s leadership during the ongoing war.
