Bangladesh's cricketing icon, Mushfiqur Rahim, reached an incredible landmark by scoring a century in his 100th Test appearance against Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. The 38-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who made his Test debut in 2005, joins an elite group as the 11th cricketer in history to achieve this significant milestone, standing alongside legends such as Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Joe Root, and David Warner.
Starting the second day at 99 not out, Rahim displayed remarkable composure. He resumed his innings gradually, eventually reaching his century with a gentle single, prompting jubilant celebrations at the stadium. This achievement made him the first cricketer from Bangladesh to play 100 Tests and score a century in the process.
Rahim exemplified skill and patience throughout his innings. After Bangladesh encountered early setbacks, he steadied the innings. He took 67 balls before striking his first boundary, an exquisite inside-out drive off Matthew Humphreys. His half-century came quickly, marked by a boundary on the first ball of the third session, showcasing his discipline and focus.
With a blend of caution and aggression, Rahim delighted the audience. He swept Humphreys for four and sent a short ball from legspinner Gavin Hoey to the boundary. His innings progressed with careful singles, leading to a score of 106 runs—his dismissal came from a misjudged delivery off Humphreys, yet his achievement resonated within the cricket community.
The match's significance was heightened by a pre-match ceremony attended by family and former captains Akram Khan and Habibul Bashar. Rahim’s contribution extended beyond records; it provided the team with recovery and steadiness during challenging moments of the game.
Rahim’s century is a testament to his two-decade-long career, characterized by resilience, patience, and skill. As the first Bangladeshi to notch up 100 Tests and score a century, his dedication to the sport has greatly impacted Bangladesh cricket. Fans and analysts alike recognized this innings as a shining example of excellence and consistency.
