Neymar Bids Farewell to International Football After Scoring in Last Match

Neymar Bids Farewell to International Football After Scoring in Last Match

Post by : Badri Ariffin

At MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Neymar concluded his international journey where it all began 16 years ago. The Brazilian star scored a goal in his farewell match for the national team, echoing the remarkable trajectory of his career.

Following Brazil's defeat to Norway, which saw them exit the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Neymar announced his retirement from international play.

Reflecting on his career, he shared: "It began here, and it ends here. It's over now." He added, "I gave it my all. I truly did."

A Heartfelt Comeback

After facing numerous injuries, making it to the World Cup was a significant milestone for Neymar. He underwent surgery and spent time recovering before regaining his place on the national squad. Just before the tournament, another injury threatened his chances of participation.

Despite these obstacles, he made a return in Brazil's crucial final group match against Scotland and delivered a final flourish against Norway.

Last Goal in a Dramatic Scenario

As Brazil faced elimination in stoppage time against Norway, they were awarded a penalty. The opposing goalkeeper, Nyland, attempted to rattle Neymar, but he stood firm and converted the penalty, sealing his last goal in international football.

Although it was a moment of personal triumph, Brazil fell to Norway 2-1, concluding their World Cup aspirations.

Historic Milestone in World Cup Legacy

Despite the disappointment of the tournament, Neymar achieved a significant milestone by becoming only the second Brazilian, after Pele, to score in four FIFA World Cups.

He joins an elite group of players, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have found the net in at least four World Cup editions.

A Legacy of Accomplishments

Neymar wraps up his international career as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 80 goals. He participated in four World Cups, won the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013, and secured Olympic gold at Rio 2016.

A Bittersweet Goodbye to the Seleção

While he couldn't lead Brazil to more glory in the World Cup, Neymar’s final game created a poignant conclusion to his celebrated international career at the very venue where it all began.
